- contagiousA contagious disease is one transmitted by physical contact, as distinct from an infectious disease, which is transmitted by micro-organisms in the air or in water. In figurative use, contagious and infectious overlap in modifying positive or welcome things (e.g. delight, enthusiasm, laughter, sense of fun, and vigour), whereas contagious (but not typically infectious) is also extended to things that are unwelcome or unpleasant (e.g. corruption, folly, greed, guilt, panic, and suffering).
